The Law On Window Tinting

The rules for tinted front windscreens and front side windows depend on when the vehicle was first used.

Front Windscreen

The front windscreen must let at least 75% of light through and the front side windows must let at least 70% of light through. Any vehicle registered after 1st April 1985 must let at least 75% light transmission to comply with the current UK legislation. Any vehicles first used before 1 April 1985, the front windscreen and front side windows must both let at least 70% of light through.

Front Side Windows

Current UK legislation states that both the driver’s window and the front passenger’s window of all vehicles must let at least 75% of light transmission to be road worthy. 

Rear Side Windows & Rear Screen

There are no rules for tinting the rear windscreen or rear passenger windows. All rear windows rear of the drivers door carry no restriction on the shade of tints.
