First Step: Removing the Wheels

Before you start the cleaning process, make sure your alloy wheels are cool and avoid doing anything when they are still warm from driving.

For a really deep clean of your alloy wheels, remove them from the car to have better access to those hard-to-reach areas. Make sure the alloy doesn’t touch the ground after removing them from the car as this could scratch or damage the surface.

Best Way Remove Brake Dust from Alloy Wheels

A pressure washer is the best when removing brake dust. All you need to do is give each alloy a blast to remove as much brake dust as possible. If you do not have a pressure washer, you can also use a soft-bristled brush for removing brake dust, but you need plenty of water, as a dry brush could scratch the surface of the alloy.

Step-by-Step Alloy Wheel Cleaning Process

The easiest way to keep your alloys looking good is to clean them every 1-2 weeks, depending on how often you drive. You’ll need a step-by-step guide to keep your wheels free from brake dust and other residues.

  • Step 1: Remove loose surface contaminants, loose debris and dust from the rim with a pressure washer.
  • Step 2: Scrub the rim using a wash mitt or sponge should remove most of the residue. You can use a normal car shampoo to help to aid you in the removal.
  • Step 3: Spray a dedicated non-corrosive alloy wheel cleaner that doesn’t damage your alloys and leave it to soak on areas of brake dust build-up.
  • Step 4: Scrub the rim using a soft-tipped wheel cleaning brush if the brake dust is stubborn or dried-on and embedded on wheel deposits.
  • Step 5: Rinse and dry the wheel with a hosepipe or pressure washer to remove any leftover residue or particles. Dry the rim thoroughly with a microfiber cloth or towel.
  • Step 6: Apply a high-quality wheel sealant that offers better protection against high-temperature brake dusk than conventional waxes and sealants. Apply the wheel sealant and leave it to dry.
